About This Call
The Artist in Residence program provides artists with the opportunity to live and work in the Horlock House to focus on the creation, promotion, and sale of their artwork. The City of Navasota and The Arts Council will provide two to three selected artists with studio, living, and retail space with utilities and rent provided free for the term of the residency, which is roughly five to six months. Each artist will receive a one-time $600 stipend at the beginning of the residency to assist with supply purchases. If an artist leaves the residency early, they will be required to pay back a pro-rated amount of the stipend.
Artists must live and work in the Horlock House for the entire term of the residency and are responsible for all groceries, equipment, and supplies necessary for artwork production. The residency provides basic furnishings including a queen bed, dresser, and desk, with shared access to a full kitchen, laundry room, den, and bathrooms. Artists must bring their own equipment (kilns, darkrooms, forges, power tools, etc.) or arrange to rent such equipment locally. Artists are responsible for all transportation to, from, and during the residency and must bring their own vehicles, as public transportation is limited. Artists must be the sole occupant of their residency location with no pets allowed. Artists must keep the Horlock Gallery open to the public Thursday through Sunday and work required gallery shifts each week. All participating artists must pass a background check and may not hold a full-time or part-time job during the residency.
Eligible applicants must concentrate on one of the following areas: 2-D Mixed Media, 3-D Mixed Media, Drawing, Fiber arts, Painting, Poetry, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, or Digital Media. Applicants must be available to live in Navasota during the residency, have reliable transportation, speak fluent English, and be eligible to live in the United States for the entire term. Applications will be juried and finalists will be selected for a virtual interview. Entry fee is $25.00. Work sample requirements: minimum 3 images, maximum 6 images; 0-3 audio files; 0-3 video files; total samples between 3 and 12. Any pieces sold through Arts Council-organized events or at the Horlock House will be split 70% to the artist and 30% to The Arts Council.
