About This Call

The Navasota Artist in Residence program offers up to three selected artists the opportunity to live and work in the historic Horlock Home in Navasota, Texas. Each residency term is approximately six months. Selected artists will receive free living space, studio space, and retail gallery space, as well as utilities. The City of Navasota and The Arts Council will provide a one-time $600 stipend at the beginning of the residency to assist with groceries, fuel, and supply purchases. Artists are responsible for their own materials, equipment, food, and transportation.

Eligible applicants must be artists working in 2-D or 3-D mixed media, drawing, fiber arts, literature, music, painting, poetry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, or digital media. Applicants must be available to live in Navasota for the entire six-month term, be fluent in English, have reliable transportation, and be eligible to live in the United States. All participating artists must pass a background check and may not hold a full-time or part-time job during the residency. The residency housing provides basic furnishings (queen bed, dresser, desk) and shared spaces (kitchen, laundry room, den, bathrooms). Artists are responsible for bringing their own specialized equipment such as kilns, darkrooms, or power tools. Artists must keep the Horlock Gallery open to the public Wednesday through Sunday and work shifts in the gallery each week. For artwork sold through The Arts Council events or at the Horlock House Gallery, artists receive 70% of sales with 30% going to The Arts Council.

The application requires 3-6 images, and may include up to 3 audio files and 3 video files (12 samples maximum). Entry fee is $25. Applications will be juried and finalists will be selected for a virtual interview.
