About This Call
The Artists in Residence program offers up to three selected artists the opportunity to live and work in the historic Horlock Home in Navasota, Texas for approximately six months (February 14, 2020 to August 10, 2020). The residency includes free studio space, living space, retail gallery space, utilities, internet, and cable. Each selected artist will receive a one-time $600 stipend at the beginning of the residency to assist with groceries, fuel, and supply purchases. If an artist leaves early, they must repay a pro-rated amount of the stipend.
Eligible applicants must be artists working in 2-D or 3-D mixed media, drawing, fiber arts, literature, music, painting, poetry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, or digital media. Applicants must be available to live in Navasota for the entire six-month term, be fluent in English, have reliable transportation, and be eligible to live in the United States. Artists may not hold a full-time or part-time job during the residency and must pass a background check. No pets are allowed.
Selected artists are responsible for supplying their own materials, equipment, food, and transportation. The residency provides basic furnishings (queen bed, dresser, desk) and shared spaces (kitchen, laundry room, den, bathrooms) but does not furnish specialized equipment such as kilns, darkrooms, or forges. Artists must keep the Horlock Gallery open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, 11:00am-5:00pm, and work rotating shifts. Sales through The Arts Council events and the Horlock House Gallery are split 70/30, with 70% going to the artist. The City of Navasota and The Arts Council will provide PR opportunities including radio interviews, promotion at events, and newsletter inclusion. Teaching opportunities may be available. Entry fee is $25. Submit 3-6 images. Applications will be juried with finalists selected for Skype interviews. Final decisions will be made by the end of December 2019.
