About This Call

The Artists in Residence program offers up to three selected artists the opportunity to live and work in the historic Horlock Home in Navasota, Texas for approximately six months (February 15, 2019 to August 12, 2019). The residency includes free studio space, living space, retail gallery space, and utilities. Each selected artist will receive a one-time $600 stipend at the beginning of the residency to assist with groceries, fuel, and supply purchases. Artists are responsible for providing their own materials, equipment, food, and transportation.

Eligible applicants must be artists working in 2-D or 3-D mixed media, drawing, fiber arts, literature, music, painting, poetry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, or digital media. Applicants must be available to live in Navasota for the entire six-month term, be fluent in English, have reliable transportation, and be eligible to live in the United States. Artists may not hold a full-time or part-time job during the residency and must pass a background check. The residency housing provides basic furnishings (queen bed, dresser, desk) and shared spaces (kitchen, laundry room, den, bathrooms). Artists are responsible for bringing their own specialized equipment (kilns, darkrooms, forges, power tools, etc.) or finding rental options in the area.

Participating artists must keep the Horlock Gallery open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and work rotating shifts. For artwork sold through The Arts Council events and at the Horlock House Gallery, artists receive 70% of sales with 30% going to The Arts Council. The program offers PR opportunities including radio interviews, promotion at Arts Council events, newsletter inclusion, and attendance at Arts Council events. Teaching opportunities may be available. Entry fee is $20.00 (make checks payable to The Arts Council). Submit 3-6 images. Applications will be juried and finalists selected for Skype interviews. Final decisions will be made in mid-January 2019.
