About This Call

The City of Navasota and The Arts Council of Brazos Valley invite artists to apply for a residency in Navasota, Texas. Up to three selected artists will live, work, and exhibit in the historic Horlock Home, which includes living and studio space for each artist as well as a retail gallery space. The residency period runs from early/mid-August 2023 to early/mid-December 2023.

The City of Navasota and The Arts Council will provide living/studio space, retail gallery space, utilities, internet, and cable free of charge. Each selected artist will receive a one-time $600 stipend at the beginning of the residency to assist with groceries, fuel, and supply purchases. Artists are responsible for supplying their own materials, equipment, food, and transportation. The residency housing provides basic items including a queen bed, dresser, and desk, with shared kitchen, laundry room, den, and bathrooms. Artists must bring their own specialized equipment (kilns, darkrooms, forges, power tools, etc.) or arrange to rent such equipment locally.

Artists are required to work 10 hours per week in the gallery space during regularly scheduled hours, attend an Open House, make regular public appearances, and complete marketing opportunities including radio interviews, TV interviews, and newspaper articles. Artists may be asked to participate in public art projects and other projects throughout the residency. The program is considered equivalent to a full-time job. Artists must complete a show in the Horlock House with no less than 80 percent new artwork created during the residency. Any pieces sold through The Arts Council events or at the Horlock House follow a 70/30 split, with 70% going to the artist and 30% to The Arts Council. Artists may not hold a full-time or part-time job during the residency. Eligible artists concentrate on: 2-D Mixed Media, 3-D Mixed Media, Drawing, Fiber arts, Literature, Music, Painting, Poetry, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, or Digital Media. Applicants must be available for the entire residency term, fluent in English, have reliable transportation, and be eligible to live in the United States. All participating artists must pass a background check. Entry fee: $25.00.
