About This Call

The Artists in Residence program offers an opportunity to live and work in the historic Horlock Home in Navasota, Texas. Selected artists will receive living and studio space, retail gallery space, utilities, and rent provided free of charge for approximately six months. Each artist will receive a one-time $600 stipend at the beginning of the residency to assist with groceries, fuel, and supply purchases. Up to three artists will be selected.

Eligible applicants must be artists working in 2-D mixed media, 3-D mixed media, drawing, fiber arts, literature, music, painting, poetry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, or digital media. Applicants must be available to live in Navasota for the entire six-month term, be fluent in English, have reliable transportation, and be eligible to live in the United States for the duration of the program. Artists may not hold a full-time or part-time job during the residency and must be able to pass a background check.

Selected artists are responsible for supplying their own materials, equipment, food, and transportation. The residency housing provides basic furnishings (queen bed, dresser, desk) and shared spaces (kitchen, laundry room, den, bathrooms). Artists must live and work at the Horlock House for the entire residency term, maintain the living and working quarters, and keep the Horlock Gallery open to the public Wednesday through Sunday, with all three artists required to work gallery shifts each week. The artist manages the gallery including staffing, displaying works, and sales. Any pieces sold through Art Council-organized events or at the Horlock House follow a 70/30 split, with 70% going to the artist and 30% to The Arts Council. The Arts Council will provide PR opportunities including radio interviews, promotion at events, newsletter inclusion, and an open house event. Teaching opportunities may be available. Applications will be juried and finalists selected for virtual interviews.
