About This Call
The Art in Public Places program seeks to diversify New Mexico's public art collection by purchasing artwork from Native or Indigenous artists in all stages of their careers. Although open to all artists, special consideration will be given to artists who identify as members of a Native American tribe or community. All visual arts media in all genres suitable for interior or exterior display will be considered for purchase. Artwork must be durable, permanent, low-maintenance, and in compliance with ADA guidelines upon installation.
This purchase initiative is open to artists who reside in the United States and galleries located in the United States. Galleries may submit on behalf of any artist they represent, regardless of the artist's residency. Artwork will be purchased for publicly accessible buildings throughout New Mexico, including amphitheaters, animal shelters, chapter houses, community centers, courthouses, educational institutions, fire stations, healthcare facilities, libraries, recreation complexes, rest areas, senior centers, and tribal administrative offices. Artwork should be priced in the $5,000-$50,000 range, all-inclusive of materials, labor, museum quality framing, delivery, installation, insurance, taxes, commissions, and documentation. Large-scale exterior artworks should include site preparation and foundation costs.
Submissions must include an artist statement (5,000 character limit) and 1-3 images of previously completed work currently available for purchase. Images must include title, media, dimensions, price, year of completion, description, and edition/print information if applicable. A Submission Review Committee will score applications based on demonstrated artistic quality, developed and consistent style, fit for permanent public installation, and cultural and artistic diversity. Artwork selected will be showcased to local selection committees for two years. Artists whose work is selected will be required to enter into a purchase contract with the State of New Mexico. Final payment will be made upon completion of contract terms and submission of final paperwork. Deadline for submission: October 29, 2024 at 11:59 PM MDT.
