About This Call

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority and Arts at the Airport are inviting artists to submit qualifications to design and install public artwork on concrete columns in a six-story parking garage under construction at Nashville International Airport. Individual artists and artist teams from Tennessee and surrounding regions (Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Indiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia) may apply. Artists must provide evidence of prior work experience with similar scale public art projects through resume, photographs, and references. Current Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority employees, commissioners, and Arts at the Airport Board members are not eligible.

The artwork will be installed on six concrete columns (one per floor), each measuring 2'-0" W x 2'-0" D. Artwork heights are 10' for levels 1 and 6, and 7' for levels 2-5. Artists may use all sides of the columns starting at 18" off the ground to 1' below the ceiling, with up to 4" projection allowed. The project goals include creating a wayfinding system to help visitors locate their parking level, utilizing contemporary media (mosaic tile, glass, metal, ceramic, wood, vinyl wrap or paint), and creating an aesthetically pleasing installation visible from the elevator lobby and exterior. The project budget is $200,000.

Deadline for qualifications submission is March 13, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. MDT via CAFÉ. Required materials include a statement of interest (1 page), current resume (2 pages), artist statement (1 page), 7 images/samples of past work with descriptions, and 3 professional references. Three to five finalists will be selected by May 1, 2017 and will each receive $2,500 to develop a detailed proposal. Finalists will participate in site visits (travel expenses paid by Airport Authority), present to the selection panel in August 2017, with final selection and contract award in September 2017.
