About This Call
Nashville International Airport (BNA) and Arts at the Airport (AaA) invite artists to submit qualifications for the design and installation of one indoor mural located in Concourse D adjacent to departure gate D5 (Southwest Airlines). The mural dimensions are 37 feet long and 7 feet tall (259 square feet), elevated 4 feet from the ground with seating in front of and directly below the mural wall. The mural will be installed in May/June 2025 and will be on view for approximately 4-6 years.
AaA is seeking original and engaging design concepts that strengthen the narrative about Nashville International Airport, the city of Nashville, aviation and travel. The mural should welcome travelers, create a sense of place, be a calming and engaging image in a busy environment, and inspire viewers with the highest quality design and craftsmanship. Suggested topics could include Nashville International Airport, the city of Nashville, aviation and travel, though these are not required.
The project budget is $18,500, which includes artist fee, all materials, and installation. Artists are responsible for using high-quality materials and primer on the wall (such as artist-grade acrylic paint and clear coat sealer), or may propose alternative installation methods suitable for the space. Installation must begin mid-to-late May 2025 and be complete by June 27, 2025. Artists and assistants must comply with all BNA security regulations when working in secure areas.
Finalists will receive $2,500 to develop a detailed proposal (50% upon selection, 50% following proposal delivery and on-site interview). Two site visits will be provided for each finalist, all expenses paid by the Airport. Selection will be based on quality, creativity, and strength of work; appropriateness to project scope; and professional qualifications and experience in the artist's medium. Eligibility is limited to individual artists and artist teams from Nashville who have been invited by Arts at the Airport. Required application materials include current resumé, brief biography, artist statement (1 page), 4-8 images of past work with descriptions, and three professional references with contact information.
