About This Call
Missouri Western State University in Saint Joseph, Missouri is accepting proposals for a sculpture to commemorate the university's centennial. Regional, national, and international artists are invited to submit proposals for a permanently installed sculpture. The selected artist will receive a $10,000 honorarium.
Work must be original and unique, created specifically for this competition. Final sculpture must be professionally constructed of durable materials that will withstand the elements and be maintenance-free for generations to come. Submit three to nine images (drawings, 3D models, or photos of maquettes) per submission showing front and back views. Artists may submit up to three proposals, with each submission requiring a minimum of three images. Include all dimensions for the artwork; there are presently no restrictions on size.
The sculpture must be suitable for outdoor installation: able to be structurally secured to a concrete pad, capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions (high winds, below zero temperatures, heavy rains, ice, snow, storms), fabricated and finished with durable non-hazardous materials, maintenance-free, and appropriate for an active pedestrian environment with proper safety considerations. The selected artist is responsible for transportation to the installation site. The University is responsible for all costs for materials and workmanship for initial installation, including site preparation, plinth, and cleanup. Once installed, the sculpture becomes the property of Missouri Western State University.
Submissions must include artist resume (maximum two pages), brief biography (one page), artist statement (one page), up to six jpeg images of sculptural work, three professional references, and a narrative description of the proposed artwork(s) (maximum three pages per submission). Entries are evaluated on artistic merit, feasibility, durability, and public safety. Entry fee is $25.00. Finalists will be selected and requested to submit maquettes for final selection. The public unveiling and reception will take place September 15, 2015.
