Museum of Exploration and Innovation 2020

MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, opened in Santa Barbara, CA in early 2017 and welcomed over 175,000 visitors in its first year. The museum's mission is to ignite learning through interactive experiences in science and creativity. MOXI has dedicated two museum spaces to rotating 3-month interactive media artworks: the Interactive Media Theater and the Bridge (Simms/Mann Family Foundation Bridge).

This call invites artists and art collectives to propose interactive media works for 2020. Recent artworks have incorporated elements such as Kinect-based body interaction, camera-based interaction, virtual reality, and augmented reality. Exhibits must be designed to be highly durable and robust to interaction from adults and children, including climbing, hanging, pushing, and pulling. Artists should submit a 3-paragraph exhibit proposal summary for either one or two exhibits, including up to two embedded images in PDF format and an estimated total budget. Budgets can be up to $10,000, inclusive of all artist fees, travel, hardware, software, fabrication, installation, and other costs. Budget detail is not required for this application phase.

Up to eight qualified applications will be chosen, and those artists will be offered $200 each to develop a more detailed exhibit proposal including drawings, detailed budget, and reference letters, and to participate in one or more interviews with MOXI's committee. The review committee will evaluate applications based on: quality of the artist's past work (aesthetic and technical), experience creating interactive artworks, experience designing and completing durable public artworks on time and within budget, artist training and education, and quality of the proposed interactive exhibit's alignment with MOXI's mission and audience. Entry fee: $25.00. Work sample requirements: minimum 3 images, maximum 14 images; minimum 0 audio files, maximum 2 audio files; minimum 0 videos, maximum 4 videos; total samples minimum 3, maximum 20.
