About This Call

The Arts Council of Greater Lansing announces a request for qualifications/proposals (RFQP) for the Museum Drive Arts Impact Project, a permanent public art installation funded by the City of Lansing Sense of Place program. The project will be installed on Michigan Avenue in downtown Lansing and seeks a bold, innovative public artwork that will engage and reflect the community and serve as a welcoming beacon to Museum Drive's cultural district. Four cultural institutions – Impression 5 Science Center, Riverwalk Theatre, RE Olds Transportation Museum and La Fille Gallery – reside within the cultural district, and the area also includes a future trailhead for the Grand River Riverwalk trail.

The RFP is open to all professional artists and/or artist-led teams based in Michigan with demonstrated capacity in innovative placemaking. The commission budget is $71,500 USD, inclusive of all artist's fees, travel, design, engineering, insurance, permits, fabrication, labor, shipping and installation. The artwork must be durable and suitable for Michigan's variable climate. The space measures 86 feet long and 18 feet deep from curb to railing, with a minimum of 6 feet of sidewalk from the curb remaining unimpeded for pedestrian traffic. The artwork should be prominent at all hours, appropriate to its surroundings, graffiti proof, and may be suspended and/or attached to existing bridge structures or placed on the embankment. Artists are encouraged to consider elements of interactivity and multimedia components such as light, digital, or sound.

Submission deadline is Friday, March 11, 2016 by 11:59 p.m. EST. No more than three finalists will be invited for a site visit on Monday, March 21, 2016. Finalists will present conceptual proposals on Friday, April 29, 2016, and will receive a $1,000 honorarium. The selected artist/team will enter into an agreement with the City of Lansing for completion and transfer of ownership. Contact: Deborah E. Mikula, Arts Council of Greater Lansing, (517) 372-4636 ext. 2 or [email protected].
