About This Call
The City of Tamarac is seeking design proposals for two public art projects: functional artistic bike racks and murals for the Sports Complex.
Bike Racks: The City is seeking design proposals for functional artistic bike racks that will accommodate 2 to 8 bicycles to be located throughout the city's owned open space facilities. This competition is open to artists and design professionals nationwide with experience working with public agencies. The sculpture bike racks should be playful, functional, big, visible and memorable. All artwork styles will be considered. The artwork should reflect the spirit of Tamarac and be impactful. All final work installed shall become the property of the City, and the City will be responsible for maintaining, repairing and refurbishing them as needed. The artwork should be durable and require minimal ongoing maintenance, designed to withstand South Florida's sub-tropical climate with intense sun and seasonal heavy rain. The sculpture bike racks should be designed and constructed in accordance with the Florida Building Code and must be self-supporting on an open landscape or hardscape. Artists may submit a maximum of 6 designs. Designs must be to scale and include dimensions including thickness. Designs shall be new and original, non-abrasive to bike frames, and safe for pedestrians and cyclists with no sharp edges or catch places. The bicycle should not have to be lifted more than 3 inches to access and be secured in the rack. The design must be compatible with commonly used U-locks and allow for a bike to be secured by the frame and at least one wheel. The rack must support the bike at two points and accommodate most sizes and shapes of bicycle frames and bike wheels. A 3-tier budget program is available: $3,000 for accommodating 2-3 bikes, $5,000 for accommodating 4-5 bikes, or $7,000 for accommodating 6-8 bikes. The budget includes all costs including artist's honorarium, research, design, materials, permitting, fabrication, delivery, installation, photography, insurance, proposals, travel, sales taxes, labor, structural engineering, and transportation. Application deadline: April 24, 2018. Artist selection and notification: May 2018. City Commission approval: June 2018. Artwork permitting and installation: September 2018.
Sports Complex Murals: The City is seeking to commission an artist or artist team to create murals on three structures at the City's Sports Complex: two dugouts and the administrative office building located at 9901 NW 77th St, Tamarac, Florida 33321. The murals should be fun, playful, big, visible and memorable. All artwork styles will be considered. The artwork should reflect the spirit of Tamarac and be impactful. Both two dimensional and three dimensional works will be considered. Three artists will be selected as semi-finalists to develop and present design proposals and receive a stipend of $750 upon completion of their proposal. The winning artists will be awarded a $50,000 contract and will be responsible for the creation and installation of the final work. The wall area for each dugout measures approximately 9 ft. high x 55 ft. wide. The administrative office building is approximately 60 feet wide. How much of the surface area to be treated will be left to the discretion of the artist. The artwork should be durable and require minimal ongoing maintenance, designed to withstand South Florida's sub-tropical climate. Application deadline: May 1, 2018. The project is open to all professional artists nationwide with experience working with public agencies. Artists are NOT eligible who are immediate family or business partners of members of the Public Art Committee or program staff, or whose artwork already exists in the City's public art inventory.
