Mural Request for Proposals at Art Works Downtown

Art Works Downtown requests proposals for a mural opportunity in Susan Kirby Place, supported by The EACH Foundation. Artists or teams of artists are invited to create a two-dimensional mural that reflects a positive creative spirit, visually compliments the surrounding area, and ignites imagination. The project is to be completed in fall 2020.

The mural space is located in the outdoor Susan Kirby Place at the Art Works Downtown art center in downtown San Rafael, serving as one of four entrances to the center and a location for various events and gatherings. The space includes concrete, wood, piping, flashing, plastic box, and lighting. The mural height must be 26 feet but may extend to the full height of the wall. General dimensions are 26–50 feet high by 15 feet 6 inches wide.

Artist eligibility is open to any artist or team of artists interested in creating a two-dimensional mural. There is no cost to apply. Applications must include: a budget plan (maximum $7,500, competitive bid process) itemizing artist fees, supplies, travel expenses, insurance, and associated costs; a project timeline; background information including resume, artist statement, visual examples of past mural work, and references; a colored draft mural design; a written statement explaining the theme, process, medium, and approximate dimensions; and a maintenance plan describing how the mural will tolerate outdoor elements. The deadline for submissions is August 15, 2020. Notification will be by September 14, with work to commence as soon as possible after contract signing and be completed by November 1, 2020. Upon selection and contract signing, ownership of the design and artwork becomes the property of Art Works Downtown.
