About This Call
The City of Pompano Beach will commission an artist or artist team for the design and installation of a mural on an exterior wall of Saxon & Wall Supermarket located at 321 NW 3rd Ave (also known as Esther Rolle Ave). The wall is 43 ft. long by 9.5 ft. tall and textured. The selected artist will receive $9,400, which includes all taxes, fees, and equipment needed to complete the mural (such as cherry picker and paint). The artist must apply an anti-graffiti coat to the finished product and complete the mural within 30 days.
The mural must reflect the history of Northwest Pompano, creating a timeline from past to present. The design should have an Afrocentric theme and cohesively blend the history of agriculture, politics, culture, and community. The mural should tell a story and enhance the aesthetic and cultural value of the city. Materials, design, and palette must withstand local weather and be amenable to ongoing maintenance. No logos, words, specific historic figures, or mascots are permitted. The selected artist must create a timelapse video of the mural as it develops.
Eligibility is open to tri-county professional visual artists with experience implementing their work in the public realm. Broward County artists will be preferred. Applicants must have mural experience and be recognized by critics and peers as professionals of serious intent and ability. Artists are not eligible if they are immediate family or business partners of Public Art Committee members or program staff. Selection will be based on appropriateness of the design to the site and theme, quality of the artwork, and artist experience. Work sample requirements: minimum 3 images, maximum 8 images.
