Mural Design for North Seattle College 2015

North Seattle College and the campus Arts Task Force are seeking an artist or artist team to design a dynamic, innovative mural on the exterior surface of a wall facing the main courtyard on campus. This project is open to all artists internationally.

The wall is concrete and measures 87 inches high by 54 feet 3 inches wide, facing a bustling campus courtyard visible to all faculty, students and staff. The design must address the entire space and successfully integrate a strong understanding of design, color and composition while speaking to the community and values of the campus. Design must be to-scale and consider the actual proportions and surrounding environment. Designs should avoid direct and literal representation of cultural diversity. Color is encouraged. The chosen design will be hand-painted by students in an advanced painting class under the direction of experienced faculty with expertise in mural execution.

Design Budget: $5,000 to include design fees, a detailed list of materials needed, 2-3 speaking appearances on campus, artist compensation, travel expenses and applicable taxes. Once chosen, the artist will provide a to-scale design with color numbers, a detailed supply list, and a gridded version for students to use for transfer. The chosen artist will have the opportunity to speak with students about their vision but will not paint alongside them except for one or two days during their campus visit. Selection will be made by the end of February 2015. The mural will be created and completed in Spring 2015, with a campus-wide celebration in mid to late June 2015. This aims to be an annual project. Artists will submit 6 digital images including the design proposal and relevant past work. Images should show how the design would look in the setting, with the proposed design drawn/rendered to scale and representing how it will look when hand-painted by brush.
