About This Call
The BMP Metropolitan District No. 1 in collaboration with RedLine is seeking proposals for a public mural for the west facing wall of the Xcel Energy Electrical Substation located at Cherokee and Alaska Ave., across the street from the Alameda light rail station. The location represents a unique intersection of urban life connecting the Denver Design District, a public transportation hub, and sets the stage for a new transit-oriented development. The site will be viewed by 70,000+ passengers that pass by the station in trains every day. Artists experienced in public murals are encouraged to apply with design concepts that capture the intersection of innovation, design, transportation, sustainability, and energy while speaking to the surrounding neighborhood.
Submissions should include a detailed description of any exclusions but artists are encouraged to provide an "all in" cost that does not exceed $60,000. The cost should include artist fees, materials, equipment, install, and any other costs from concept to completion. Proposals will be evaluated based on appropriateness to the project vision, artistic excellence, contribution to the site's historic and ethnic characteristics, susceptibility to wear and vandalism, longevity and performance of materials, maintenance schedule and recommendations, compliance to public safety codes, and installation timeline.
Applicants must submit via CaFÉ: completed application form, current resume/CV (PDF or Word), artist statement and letter of interest (PDF or Word) addressing what intrigues you about the site and how you would align your concept within that context, concept description and design mock-up (to-scale colored drawing strongly encouraged), and 5 to 10 samples of past and recent work with descriptions. For public art installations, include location, commissioning organization, and budget. Artists will be required to sign an Artists Agreement and Waiver of Rights and Release as required by Xcel Energy, and a Commissioning Agreement stating the installation will be performed at the artist's own risk.
