Mural Artist Residency on Water Street

The City of Henderson is calling on artists to design and create a large-scale mural on the wall of the Oceanside Apartments on Water Street. The selected artist or artist team will be housed in a furnished two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment at the mural site while the piece is created. The City seeks submissions that consider the past, present, and future of downtown Henderson to create a unique and iconic piece that welcomes everyone to the Water Street District.

The mural wall is approximately 32 feet by 32 feet of smooth stucco, located at the gateway entry to the south side of Henderson's downtown corridor at West Ocean Avenue and Tin Street. The artwork will welcome residents and visitors to the Water Street District, a neighborhood undergoing redevelopment and reinvestment. Upon completion, a walkway and seating will be installed. Artists are encouraged to consider designs that promote public interaction and may include a physical lighting element as part of the artwork.

The $30,000 honorarium covers the one-month project timeline. Housing for up to 4 artists will be provided. Artists must provide their own paint, supplies, tools, equipment, and lift/scaffold rental or operation. A pre-approved anti-graffiti/UV coating is required on the final artwork. Applications must include a visual mock-up of the proposed mural (2 pages maximum), a written creative approach (250 words), a written physical approach (250 words), and up to 3 examples of previous mural work. This opportunity is open to professional artists and artist teams age 18 and above with prior outdoor mural experience. The selection committee will prioritize artists with experience completing public art for municipalities and with previous theme-based public art work.
