About This Call

The Municipality of Anchorage is announcing a call for qualified artists to create artwork for Robert W. Service High School in accordance with Municipal Code 7.40. Two art installations will be commissioned at $100,000 per artwork to be permanently installed at two locations in the remodeled high school located at 5577 Abbott Road. Project construction began in May 2013 and will be completed by summer 2016.

Three potential sites have been discussed for artwork placement: the ceiling of the remodeled library (20'6" high with 14' usable diameter, accommodating three-dimensional suspended artwork under 500 lbs); ten columns in the remodeled cafeteria (each 2' by 2' square, 13'6" tall, with artwork positioned 8' to 13' tall); and the cafeteria ceiling (requiring three-dimensional suspended artwork down the center to accommodate acoustical baffles, with junction boxes available for powered lit artwork). The cafeteria is used as a multi-purpose space and practice facility, so artwork must be extremely durable.

Robert W. Service High School, built in 1971 and named after the Yukon gold rush writer and poet, is located in southeastern Anchorage adjacent to the Chugach Mountains. Approximately 1,800 students attend between late August and mid-May, including during the darkest months of the year. The art selection jury encourages themes related to the alpine environment and light. Selection criteria include artistic merit, appropriateness of medium and style, experience with similar scale projects and public art processes, strong communication skills, and diversity of artists and mediums. Artists with no prior public art experience will be seriously considered. Submit 1-6 images. Contact the Curator of Public Art at (907) 343-6473 or [email protected] for additional information.
