About This Call
The Municipality of Anchorage is inviting qualified artists to create public artwork proposals for the Department of Solid Waste Services' newly constructed Central Transfer Station, located at 1208 E 56th Avenue, Anchorage, AK 99507. The Art Selection Jury intends to commission artwork for three separate locations, totaling $560,000 to be permanently installed throughout the facility.
Location 1 ($300,000) consists of four separate sites along the residential vehicle access route approaching the Residential Unloading Zone. These are exterior, landscaped areas with high visibility and vehicular traffic. Proposals should address all four sites and convey a narrative of circular economy and extended material life. Preference will be given to proposals incorporating or referencing recycled materials. Artwork should interact with the surrounding natural environment through responsive engagement with natural elements such as wind, rain, and sun. Pile foundations at each site can support static loads up to 4,000 pounds. Electrical power is available near foundations 1.A and 1.D.
Location 2 ($60,000) is an exterior wall area at the exit from the Residential Unloading Zone, composed of two offset walls (lower wall approximately 10' 6" high, upper wall approximately 17' 6" high, both approximately 82' 9.5" long). The Art Selection Jury is accepting proposals for two-dimensional mural work in any medium suitable to exterior walls. Artwork should address land stewardship concepts relating to circular material use and sustainability. The wall surface cannot be pierced for mounting. The facility color scheme includes Sherwin Williams colors: Drift of Mist (SW9166), Peppercorn (SW7674), and Stolen Kiss (SW7586).
Location 3 ($200,000) is the interior entry atrium of the administrative building, a two-story space with east-facing windows, open stairwell, and lofted ceiling. The Art Selection Jury is interested in wall-mounted, suspended, and architecturally integrated design concepts. Artwork incorporating or responding to light and introducing color and vibrancy is encouraged. Proposals should be eye-catching and engaging, addressing land stewardship concepts and connecting with both youth and elder generations.
The Central Transfer Station is scheduled for substantial completion by March 31, 2023. Artwork installation will be coordinated with the Curator of Public Art and the SWS Department. Entry deadline: May 1, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Applicants may submit up to 3 applications. Work sample requirements: 6 images. Eligibility: Open to national applicants. Contact: Curator of Public Art, Public Art Program, (907) 343-6473 or [email protected].
