About This Call
The Municipality of Anchorage is inviting qualified artists to create public artwork proposals for the Anchorage Police Department's newly renovated Elmore facility. The Art Selection Jury intends to commission artwork for four locations, totaling $55,000, to be permanently installed throughout the facility.
Location 1 (Conference Room, $20,000): Proposals are limited to two-dimensional murals on seven acoustic dampening panels (each approximately 4'x4', overall dimensions 4'H x 28'W). The jury seeks bold, dynamic, contemporary proposals that promote connection among staff. Suggested topics include landscape imagery, APD core values of Honor, Excellence, Gratitude, & Service, and historical references to the Anchorage Police Department.
Location 2 (Public & Staff Entry, $15,000): Artwork for separate public and staff interior entry areas with large south-facing windows. Installation areas measure approximately 8'7"H x 10'7"W x 7'D. Proposals should be contemporary, respond to or incorporate APD core values, and be bold, cool, and welcoming.
Location 3 (Quiet Rooms, $5,000): The jury intends to purchase existing two-dimensional works of art for three separate Quiet Rooms (approximately 14'7"L x 5'2"W x 8'7"H). Artists may submit up to six existing, complete, ready-to-hang works. These rooms are designated for staff wellness in response to high-stress situations; artwork should explore topics of wellness, resilience, contemplation, and quietude.
Location 4 (Hallways, $15,000): Two interior hallways on first and second floors (first floor approximately 58'L x 8'7"H; second floor approximately 175'L x 8'7"H). Proposals limited to wall areas; artwork cannot impede foot traffic. Two-dimensional, wall-mounted, low relief, or direct application mural work suitable. The jury seeks bold, contemporary proposals that dynamically flow through the halls and promote connection among staff.
Eligibility is open to national applicants. Budgets cover all costs including design, fabrication, travel, accommodations, transportation, installation, photographic documentation, catalog documentation, and identifying plaque. Artists must pay any required permitting or engineer fees, and structural or engineer fees for approved modifications. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and prevailing wage rates, may apply. Contact: Curator of Public Art, (907) 343-6473.
