About This Call

Request for Qualifications for a public art commission at the Martin Luther King Jr Career Center. The Municipality of Anchorage seeks one artwork to be permanently installed in the remodeled school located at 2650 East Northern Lights Boulevard. The installation must be completed by December 2014.

The art will be installed on concrete block walls on the main level of the school near the welding and carpentry classrooms. The south wall measures approximately 18 feet long and 3 feet 6 inches tall (with a reserved area of 1 foot 8 inches by 5 feet for classroom identification). The east wall measures 24 feet in length and varies from 3 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall. The Martin Luther King Jr Career Center serves over 1,000 students and focuses on preparing them for entry-level positions in career fields or post-secondary education. The theme of the proposed artwork should be centered in the construction trades including welding, carpentry, and construction electricity. Student involvement in the project is encouraged.

Commission amount: $28,000. This must include all costs of design, fabrication, installation, permitting, photographic documentation, catalog documentation, and an identifying plaque. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and prevailing wage rates, may apply. Eligibility: Alaskan artists only; past King Career Center students preferred. Artists will be selected based on artistic merit, appropriateness of medium and style, experience with similar projects, communication skills, and diversity of artists and mediums. Artists with no prior public art experience will be seriously considered. Applicants must submit six digital images of past work (with title, materials, dimensions, and value), a 1-2 page resume, an artist statement describing interest or qualifications for the project, and answers to required questions about proposed medium/media and student involvement. Contact: Curator of Public Art, Municipality of Anchorage, (907) 343-6473.
