About This Call
The Municipality of Anchorage is announcing a call for qualified artists to create artwork for East High School under the 1% for Art Program. This is a national call with Alaskan preference. The art selection jury intends to commission one artwork to be permanently installed on the exterior of the remodeled school located at 4025 E. Northern Lights Blvd in Anchorage, Alaska.
Two locations are available for proposals. The first is an exterior wall on the west side of the school, north of the Bragaw Entrance, measuring approximately 20' wide and 8'5" tall, situated 15' above the ground. The artwork will need to complement an existing stained glass window by Marcus Tingle. The second location is a raised, circular grass mound in an exterior plaza near the center of the school grounds, measuring approximately 20' in diameter. The commission budget is $19,000. Sculptures taller than 6' must be engineered and permitted through the MOA system.
Artwork must be durable with minimal maintenance requirements and designed to last the life of the building. The installation must meet IBC 2009 building code standards as amended by the Municipality of Anchorage, which is an earthquake area. There are no restrictions on style or design. Artists will be selected based on artistic merit, appropriateness of medium and style, experience with similar projects, communication skills, and ability to work with diverse community members. Artists with no prior public art experience will be seriously considered.
Submit six digital images of past work (identified with title, materials, dimensions, and value), a 1-2 page resume, an artist statement describing your interest and qualifications for the project, and answers to required questions including which location(s) you are applying for, your proposed medium/approach, and commission range. Up to two applications are allowed per artist. Contact the Curator of Public Art at (907) 343-6473 or [email protected] for additional information.
