About This Call
The Municipality of Anchorage is inviting qualified artists to create public artwork proposals for Eagle River Elementary School in Eagle River, Alaska. The Art Selection Jury intends to commission three separate art installations totaling $67,000 to be permanently installed throughout the school: Location 1 ($14,000) - a dark brown anodized wall in the main entry vestibule; Location 2 ($24,000) - the entry ramp leading to the Music classroom; Location 3 ($29,000) - the south hallway corridor leading to the school library. All three locations are interior, high foot traffic areas. The school serves pre-K through 6th grade students.
Location 1 proposals should represent or respond to the school mascot, the Eagle, and be welcoming, vibrant, and bright. Location 2 proposals should respond to the progression of student development in music education from pre-K through 6th grade, with emphasis on inclusion and diversity, and may incorporate safe, tactile, and textural surfaces. Location 3 proposals should reference the natural landscape of the surrounding Eagle River area through an educational lens, including representations of the hydrological cycle, local geological features, and biodiversity specific to the Chugach mountains. All artwork must be durable, designed to last the life of the building, and meet IBC 2018 building code standards as amended by the Municipality of Anchorage. Surplus materials (2%) will be required for future maintenance needs, if appropriate.
Artists must submit six digital images from their portfolio, a current 1-2 page resume with three professional references, an artist statement describing their interest in and qualifications for the project, and a brief conceptual proposal identifying location, medium, and thematic relevance. The total budget of $67,000 covers all costs including design, fabrication, transportation, installation, photographic documentation, catalog documentation, and an identifying plaque. Permitting and engineer fees required must be paid by the artist. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and prevailing wage rates, may apply. Selection will be based on artistic merit, appropriateness of medium and style, experience with similar projects, communication skills, and the program goal to reflect diversity of artists and media.
