About This Call

The Municipality of Anchorage is announcing a call for qualifications for artwork to be designed for the Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center being remodeled in Chugiak, Alaska. The art selection jury intends to commission artwork to be permanently installed at one location in or around the remodeled Senior Center located at 22424 North Birchwood Loop Road in Chugiak, Alaska.

Four potential sites have been discussed for artwork placement: the base or façade surrounding the LED electronic message board near the northwest corner of the property; two interior walls on either side of the dining hall; the area above the staircase; and the courtyard outside the dining room to the east (approximately 30 feet in diameter). The art selection committee welcomes suggestions for other sites. Anything located on the exterior of the Center must be extremely durable. An on-site tour will be offered to selected finalists. The Chugiak Senior Citizen's Inc., incorporated in 1975, serves seniors in the Chugiak/Eagle River community. Proposed themes include sharing stories, reminiscing, messages of welcome, and the history of the Senior Center. The proposed work should be friendly to elderly residents.

Artists will be selected based on: artistic merit as evidenced by past work; appropriateness of medium, style, and experience in relation to project goals and setting; experience with similar scale and scope projects including familiarity with public art processes and community collaboration; strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse community members; and diversity of artists and mediums. Artists with no prior public art experience will be seriously considered. Submissions must include six digital images of past work (1-6 images accepted), each identified with title, materials, dimensions, and value; a current 1-2 page resume; and a one thousand character artist statement describing your approach to concept and why you are interested or qualified for this project. Eligibility is national. For additional information, contact the Curator of Public Art at Municipality of Anchorage Permit Center: (907) 343-6473 or (907) 249-7567 (FAX).
