About This Call

The Municipality of Anchorage is announcing a call for qualified artists to create artwork for Robert W. Service High School under the 1% for Art Program. The art selection jury intends to commission an art installation ($17,000) to be permanently installed at one or more identified locations near the auditorium of the high school, located at 5577 Abbott Road in Anchorage. Five potential sites have been identified for artwork placement, with varying dimensions ranging from interior vestibule walls to exterior niche spaces and hallway areas. Detailed images and dimensions are available in the Art Proposal Package.

Robert W. Service High School, built in 1971 and named after Yukon gold rush writer and poet Robert W. Service, is located in the southeastern part of Anchorage adjacent to the Chugach Mountains. The Grant Fraser Memorial Auditorium was named in honor of Marine Lance Corporal Grant Fraser, a Service High School graduate killed in Iraq in 2005, who was known for his participation in theater productions. The auditorium serves as a place for learning, performances, and community theater. The theme for this commission is the celebration of the performing arts.

The total commission is $17,000, which includes all costs of design, fabrication, installation, photographic documentation, catalog documentation, and an identifying plaque. Artwork must be durable with minimal maintenance requirements and designed to last the life of the building. The installation must meet IBC 2009 building code standards as amended by the Municipality of Anchorage, including earthquake safety requirements. Sculptures taller than 6' must be engineered and permitted through the MOA system. Artists must submit six digital images of past work, a 1-2 page resume, and an artist statement describing their interest in and qualifications for the project. Eligibility is limited to Alaska artists. Contact the Curator of Public Art at (907) 343-6473 for additional information.
