About This Call

The Municipality of Anchorage is announcing a call for qualified artists for Fire Station 41 in Girdwood, Alaska. In accordance with Municipal Code 7.40, the Art Selection Jury is seeking artists to create two separate artworks for the facility. The total commission is $35,000: $23,000 for glass artwork and $12,000 for wall artwork.

Glass Artwork ($23,000): A site-specific piece of integrative glass art on the windows at the public entrance of the facility. Windows face west with views from the training room and kitchen. The jury will consider any method of glass treatment, including stained glass, etching, fused glass, and colored glass. Wall Artwork ($12,000): Wall-mounted artwork for the East, West, and South upper portions of the kitchen walls. The jury will consider painted murals, paintings, photography, prints, reliefs not exceeding 10" depth, ceramic or tile work, and other media. The kitchen is the center of the station and serves as a congregation point for firefighters, volunteers, and the public. Materials must be durable and require minimal maintenance.

The Art Selection Jury is primarily interested in artwork that reflects the Girdwood Valley and community, including themes of fisheries, bore tide, wildlife, and the surrounding environment. Project construction begins May 2016 and will be completed by Fall 2017. Artwork installation will occur in summer 2017. The installation must be permanent, designed to last the life of the building, and meet IBC 2009 building code standards as amended by the Municipality of Anchorage. All suspended pieces must be at least 18" lower than the sprinkler system. The commission includes all costs of design, site preparation, fabrication, installation, photographic documentation, catalog documentation, and an identifying plaque. State laws related to public construction, including licensing, insurance, bonding, and prevailing wage rates, may apply.

Eligibility is limited to Alaska artists, with preference given to Girdwood residents. Artists will be selected based on artistic merit, appropriateness of medium and style, experience with similar projects, communication skills, and ability to work with diverse community members. Artists with no prior public art experience will be seriously considered. Applicants must submit six digital images of past work, a 1-2 page resume with three professional references, an artist statement describing interest and qualifications for the project, and answers to required questions about location, medium, and commission level. Contact: Curator of Public Art, (907) 343-6473 or [email protected].
