About This Call

TriMet, Portland Development Commission and the Port of Portland invite applications for a public art opportunity at the Mt Hood MAX light rail station in the Cascade Station development in Portland, Oregon. The Mt Hood station is the first station experienced by passengers leaving Portland International Airport and the first station within the Cascade Station commercial development due east of the Airport. The location for the artwork is in the paved area to the east of the station. The artwork can be a single work or a series of smaller elements that address the larger area.

The total budget for the project is $57,500, including artist fees, travel, fabrication, installation and all related expenses with exception of engineering. The artwork should celebrate the arrival to and departure from Portland, demonstrate the city's commitment to sustainability, and be safe, low maintenance and vandal resistant. The audience for the artwork will be primarily passengers on the train and secondly pedestrians.

Applications must include a statement of interest (2,000 characters), resume (1-2 pages), eight digital images of past work, and three references with phone numbers. All applications will be subjected to juried evaluation. Up to three semi-finalists will be selected for interviews. The selection committee will evaluate artistic merit as evidenced by images, proven ability to undertake comparable projects, and professional qualifications. The timeline includes artist selection the week of August 16, concept presentation the week of September 27, final design the week of November 15, and installation in May 2011. Contact Mary Priester, Public Art Manager at [email protected] for questions.
