MSSU Outdoor Sculpture Competition

Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri invites artists to submit entries for a two-year outdoor public art competition. Sculptures will be displayed on temporary loan, creating a rotating collection of public art around campus. An online map will permit public engagement and increase accessibility, while a plaque at each installation site will detail information about the artist and the sculpture.

Selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend upon receipt of the artwork and an additional $1,000 at the time of pickup in May 2027. Installation will occur in June 2025. The displayed works will be regionally promoted and available for sale. All pieces must remain on-site through the duration of the contract. Pieces purchased by individuals or businesses and donated back to MSSU will be relocated to a permanent location on campus.

Submissions must be existing, ready-to-install sculptures constructed of durable materials that can withstand the elements and be safely attached to existing concrete pads. Only one sculpture per application; artists may submit up to 3 applications at $10 per entry. Submit 1-6 photos of the sculpture (a photo with size/scale reference is highly encouraged). No maquettes or renderings will be considered. The artist is responsible for transporting, installing, and removing the sculpture. Entry deadline: February 28, 2025. Artists will be notified by April 2025. The competition is open to all artists regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Artist teams are eligible to apply.
