About This Call
The Municipality of Anchorage is seeking qualified artists to create two permanent art installations for the renovated Mountain View Elementary School located at 4005 McPhee Ave, Anchorage, AK 99508. The total commission is $90,000, divided between two locations: $60,000 for an exterior front entry installation and $30,000 for an interior multipurpose room proscenium.
Location 1 (Exterior Front Entry, $60,000): The west entry faces McPhee Avenue and serves as the main daily entry and exit. Artists may propose interventions to the parapet, canopy, and/or building façade, including painted murals, vinyl decals or wraps, lighting, or other mounted or applied media. The parapet cannot be pierced. Any alterations must be durable and wind resistant, with an estimated $3,000-$5,000 allowance for structural and engineering costs included in the budget.
Location 2 (Interior Multipurpose Room Proscenium, $30,000): The proscenium frames the stage in a room used for school and community events. Artists may propose murals, paintings, mosaics, cut metal, mixed media, lighting, or other applied media. Flanking sides are approximately 15' x 6' and the transom is approximately 3' x 32'.
Artists may apply for one or both locations. This is a national call with preference for Alaska-based and Indigenous artists. The jury focused on themes of diversity, multiculturalism, global community, and Alaska Native artwork. All artwork must be durable, require minimal maintenance, pose no safety hazard, and meet IBC 2009 building code standards as amended by the Municipality of Anchorage. Sculptures taller than 6' must be engineered and permitted. The budget covers all design, fabrication, installation, documentation, and plaques.
Submission requirements include six digital images of past work, a 1-2 page resume with three professional references, an artist statement addressing interest and qualifications, and answers to required questions about location, medium, and commission level. Contact the Curator of Public Art at (907) 343-6473 or [email protected] for additional information.
