About This Call
The City of Loveland Art in Public Places Program is accepting Requests for Qualifications for a sculptural work to be installed in a new roundabout at the intersection of Mountain Lion and North Boyd Lake Avenues, south of Highway 34. The 100-foot radius roundabout will be constructed in fall 2017 with sculpture installation to follow. The City's Visual Arts Commission seeks non-representational artwork that is easily identifiable from a distance, makes use of silhouetted or negative space, works "in the round," and could not be construed as traffic or wayfinding signals.
There is no pedestrian access to the site, so the sculpture must have immediate visual impact without requiring close inspection. The sculpture will be in the line of sight for motorists and passengers, with scale set according to the site. A maximum of $26,000 has been allocated for the sculpture, including all design, fabrication, insurance, installation, travel, contingency, and incidental costs. The project is open to any professional artist or artist team with demonstrated experience creating signature artwork of large scale.
Applications must include a preliminary statement of approach communicating scope and scale, 5-10 images of artwork completed within the past five years highlighting public art pieces of similar scale, a conceptual image for the site (maximum 3 images if submitting a specific sculpture proposal), and 3 professional references. An artist may be selected directly from initial applications, or the selection panel may interview finalists based on conceptual drawings. If multiple semi-finalists are selected, each will present a scaled maquette. The selected artist will enter into a contract with the City of Loveland and must carry $1 million general liability insurance.
