About This Call

The Orange County Public Art Review Board seeks one or more artists or artist teams to develop artwork for the Mosquito Control Building to be constructed in the Pine Hills Community. The building will house an entry lobby, conference room, offices, laboratories and garages. Pine Hills is one of Orlando's first suburbs developed in the early 1950s, consisting of many world cultures. The panel seeks unified designs representing the community's diverse and inclusive values as well as environmental elements.

Possibilities for artwork include art and images embedded in walls and floors, stained glass or glass installation, free-standing sculpture, kinetic sculpture, metal work, mosaic, and mural. Placement options include the entry gate, entry lobby wall, floor and windows, garage bay doors and surrounding wall, conference room walls and windows, clerestory windows, and parking lot. Artist coordination with the developer is required. Construction will begin in fall 2022, with opening scheduled for fall 2023.

A budget of $68,500 has been approved for artwork. The selected artist(s) or team(s) will be awarded a comprehensive contract. The artist will be responsible for artwork design, fabrication, materials, installation, insurance, travel, public presentations, meetings with Orange County staff as necessary, identification plaque, and all related incidental expenses. This opportunity is open to professional artists working in any appropriate media. Student artists may apply if they can secure an experienced public artist to serve as a mentor. Submissions require a professional resume, letter of interest outlining approach, and 1-6 images of finished works or conceptual drawings. Selected finalists will be notified March 7, 2022, and will be paid a $500 stipend to provide proposals. Final artist selection will follow proposal review. Artwork installation is scheduled for summer/fall 2023.
