About This Call
The City of Pompano Beach is commissioning an artist for the design and fabrication of a mosaic mural project to be completed over one year for the gateway into the Innovation District. The selected Lead Artist will be required to select five apprentices to teach and assist in the fabrication and installation process.
The mosaic project will be located on the front and back of the overpass columns under Interstate 95 (I-95) over Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Blvd. There are 27 columns measuring 137.5 inches in diameter and 12 feet tall. The theme is "Patterns of Pompano" with designs representative of Pompano Beach that are colorful and bright. Paint may be incorporated into the design, but if used, an anti-graffiti coating must be applied. Materials may include ceramic mosaic, glass mosaic, cut granite, porcelain enamel, stainless steel, aluminum, faceted or laminated glass, or other durable, maintenance-free materials impervious to elements and vandalism. The finished mosaics must be flat with no sharp edges, all sanded down. Small ceramic sculptures and objects are also allowed.
The project budget is $125,000.00, which includes all apprentice payments ($15,000.00 total for five apprentices), supplies, insurance, permits, taxes, and fees. The Lead Artist is responsible for purchasing materials. The City will provide studio space at the Bailey Contemporary Arts Center. The Public Art Committee and City must approve all designs before fabrication and inspect the project at 10%, 25%, 50%, and 90% completion phases. Necessary permits from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) must be acquired by the Lead Artist.
Eligibility is open to professional teaching artists living or working in South Florida with experience in mosaic artwork. Teaching experience is preferred but not required. The Lead Artist must demonstrate expertise in mosaic, tile making, and ceramic disciplines and must have Specialty Insurance Coverage with apprentices covered up to one million dollars. A background check will be performed on the Lead Artist. Apprentices must be 18 and over and either students, residents, or work in Pompano Beach. The Lead Artist is required to spend at least five hours per week teaching apprentices about mosaics and tile/ceramic making. Three artists will be shortlisted to create detailed proposals and will receive a $200.00 honorarium.
Submissions must include: resume with teaching and mosaic/ceramic experience; digital images of portfolio (maximum 8 images); Mosaic Approach Statement (limited to 500 words); and Teaching Approach Statement (limited to 500 words). Deadline: May 5, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT / May 6, 2022 at 1:59 a.m. EST.
