About This Call
The City of Pompano Beach is commissioning an artist or artist team for the design and fabrication of four separate mosaic mural projects to be completed over two years. The selected lead artist must select five apprentices to teach and assist in fabrication and installation.
Projects include: Trail of Honey Bees (multiple mosaic murals and ceramic sculptures stretching from I-95 on MLK Blvd to Bailey on NE 1st Ave, themed around honey bees and pollination); Music Leads the Way (mosaic murals and ceramic sculptures throughout the Pompano Beach Amphitheater, a 3,000-seat open-air performing arts theatre); an I-95 bridge over MLK Blvd; and Charlotte Burrie Community Center. The first two projects will be completed first. The City will set specific deadlines and must approve all designs before fabrication. Staff will inspect and approve each project at 10%, 25%, 50%, and 90% completion phases. After the two-year contract, the City may extend on a yearly basis.
Budget is $70,000 ($35,000 per year) for artwork purchase, including all insurance, taxes, and fees. Apprentices receive a total budget of $15,000 per year ($30,000 for two years). The lead artist is responsible for purchasing materials; the City provides studio space at Bailey. Materials must be durable, maintenance-free, impervious to elements and vandalism, and able to retain form and color. Finished panels must be flat with no sharp edges.
Eligibility: Open to professional teaching artists living or working in South Florida with experience in mosaic and kindred projects. Teaching experience is preferred but not required. Apprentices must be 18 or older and either students, residents, or work in Pompano Beach. The lead artist must have Specialty Insurance Coverage; apprentices must be covered under the lead artist's General Liability Insurance up to one million dollars. The lead artist must spend at least five hours per week teaching apprentices. A background check will be performed on the lead artist and apprentices.
Submissions must include: resume with teaching and mosaic/ceramic experience; digital portfolio images (maximum 8); Mosaic Approach Statement (500 words maximum) describing approach to Trail of the Honey Bees and Music Leads the Way; simple sketches of proposed designs (1-3 designs for first two projects); and Teaching Approach Statement (500 words maximum). Selection criteria include experience in mosaics and teaching, quality of past artwork, teaching plan/curriculum, and proposed design.
