About This Call
The Town of Morristown, NJ in collaboration with Morris Arts seeks a professional visual artist or artist team to create public artwork at a critical gateway to the town. This is the third project under Morristown's Percent for Art program, in which redevelopment projects contribute 1% of construction costs to a local art project. The artist should create a signature piece that enhances Morristown's artistic reputation and speaks to the energy, movement, and transformation of the town. The artwork should serve as a destination in itself while contributing to the aesthetic of the surrounding area. Artists have latitude in their choice of medium and design specifics.
The project location is a block at the heart of downtown Morristown between Market Street and Bank Street, extending from Washington Street to Mt. Kemble Ave. Four potential locations for art have been identified within this area. Respondents may propose art at any of the four locations and should allocate the proposed budget across as many locations as they deem appropriate. A total budget of $170,000 is available and includes all fees and expenses (materials, equipment, labor, permits, engineering documents, insurance, taxes, travel, presentation fees, installation, shipping, identification plaque, and documentation). Project completion is required within one year of award.
Eligible applicants must be professional artists residing in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania with previous experience completing public art projects of similar budgets and scales. Applicants must have completed at least one site-specific public art project using durable and permanent materials, experience in installation or ability to oversee installation, and must be over 18 and a legal permanent resident. Artists may apply individually or in teams and may propose subcontractors or additional hired labor. Applications should include biography, one-page resume, 2-7 work samples, 500-word letter of interest, 500-word letter of intent describing how the artist meets RFP criteria, and preliminary concept. Up to three finalists will be recommended and receive a $500 honorarium to submit formal site-specific proposals.
