Morgan County-Decatur Farmer's Market Mosaic Mural

The Urban Art Committee, a partnership between Alabama Center for the Arts, Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority, and other community partners, is seeking mosaic proposals for the new farmers market building in Downtown Decatur, Alabama. The Morgan County-Decatur Farmers Market has been a thriving public marketplace since 1937. A brand-new building is currently being constructed in the location of the old market, featuring an open-air structure with accessible vendor stalls, a green space for events and entertainment, and new finishes. The mosaic mural will serve as the focal point for the exterior of the building facing the green space and street front.

The committee seeks a mosaic mural that focuses on farming, agriculture, or produce specific to the Morgan County area. The mural will be the largest public mosaic piece in the area and a destination for photo opportunities and community pride. The wall dimensions are 9 feet (height) x 7 feet (width). The wall space is made of foam core backerboard (GoBoard) surrounded by cedar plank flashing. The mosaic mural is exterior and will be exposed to outdoor elements. Artists are encouraged to think outside the box and incorporate various elements into the mosaic piece.

Applicants must submit a minimum of five and maximum of ten images of previously completed work demonstrating the ability to design, create, and implement large mosaic murals, with information including artist's name, title of piece, year, media, dimensions, location, project budget, commissioning agency, and collaborators (if applicable). Three professional references with name, title, affiliation, phone number, and email address are required. A site-specific proposal must include an image of the proposed design, a description of intended materials for site preparation and protective coatings, an itemized budget, and estimated time to complete the piece. Any artist over the age of 18 is eligible to apply. The project budget is $7,500-$10,000 (subject to negotiation based on mosaic mural complexity). Entry fee is $15.00.
