About This Call

The Morean Center for Clay (MCC) is located in the Historic Train Station in the Warehouse Arts District of St. Petersburg, Florida. The facility offers educational courses in ceramics, studio spaces, gallery sales, event rentals, and exhibitions, and is home to a nationally recognized Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program.

The Artist in Residence Program aims to enhance the educational experience of ceramic artists seeking professional recognition. The program emphasizes community involvement, professional development, teaching experience, and self-exploration. Residents must have a bachelor's or master's degree in art and are accepted for a one-year term, with the option of a second term upon mutual agreement. AIRs are encouraged to expand their body of work, apply to shows, teach classes, and participate in critiques. A solo exhibition serves as the capstone experience. The program is competitive, with six positions available each year.

The residency is a work exchange program. Residents work 12 hours per week in exchange for studio access, 24-hour studio access, kiln firings, and discounts on clays. Work includes assisting in workshops, studio maintenance, loading/firing kilns, mixing glazes, and installing exhibitions. MCC also offers $200 per month work-for-hire compensation ($10/hour for up to 20 hours monthly) for duties such as kiln work, glaze mixing, and facilities maintenance. Residents can earn additional income through teaching classes and chaperoning events. Affordable shared housing is available. Facilities include an Anagama kiln, wood soda kiln, small train kiln, soda kiln, 2 cone 10 gas kilns, raku kiln, 14 electric kilns, pizza kiln, Soldner mixer, Peter Pugger pugmill, ballmill, and spray booth.

Applications are due May 1, 2021. The residency runs August 1, 2021 through July 31, 2022. Application requirements include a $20 fee, 20 images, image list, 3 references with contact information, artist statement, resume, and letter of intent.
