About This Call

The Artist in Residence (AIR) Program at the Morean Center for Clay (MCC) aims to enhance and further the educational experience of clay artists seeking recognition in the professional realm. The program is open to individuals with either a bachelor's or master's degree in art who are interested in working in a studio setting to continue fostering their growth as ceramic artists.

During their residency, artists are encouraged to build their body of work, apply to shows, and participate in group and individual critiques. A solo exhibition serves as the capstone experience for the program, highlighting the concentration of the artist's work during their time at MCC. The AIR program is highly competitive, attracting dozens of applicants from across the nation for only six positions each year. After completing the program, residents have gone on to graduate school, owned and operated their own studios, or become professors at colleges and universities.

The AIR program is a work exchange program. Each resident agrees to work 15 hours per week in exchange for studio space, 24-hour studio access, kiln firings, and discounts on clays. Studio maintenance includes sweeping, mopping, loading and firing kilns, mixing glazes, splitting and stacking wood, setting up gallery shows, and maintaining inventory. The MCC also offers a stipend of $200 per month or $10 per hour (whichever comes first) in exchange for teaching and/or building maintenance. The residency runs from August 1st through July 31st. Application deadline is April 15th. Required materials include a $20 application fee, 20 images, image list, 3 references with email and phone contacts, artist statement, resume, and letter of intent.
