About This Call
The Morean Center for Clay (MCC) is located in the Historic Train Station within the Warehouse Arts District of St. Petersburg, Florida. The Artist in Residence Program aims to enhance the educational experience of ceramic artists seeking professional recognition through community involvement, professional development, teaching experience, and self-exploration. Residents work in a shared studio setting to continue their progression as ceramic artists. The program is competitive, attracting applicants from across the nation for up to five positions each year. Residents are accepted for a one-year term, with the option of a second term upon mutual agreement. A solo exhibition serves as the capstone experience, highlighting the artist's evolution during their time at MCC.
The residency is a work exchange program. Each resident agrees to work 8 hours per week in exchange for studio space (450 cubic ft), 24-hour studio access, free firings (Electric and Gas), and discounts on clay purchases and classes. Weekly work includes assisting in workshops, kiln loading/firing, mixing glazes, installing exhibitions, and studio maintenance. Residents typically work one day per week (9am-5pm) at MCC. Additional work-for-hire compensation is available at $11/hr for first-year residents and $12/hr for second-year residents. Residents can also earn income through teaching classes and workshops at MCC and other Morean locations. Affordable shared housing is available for $350/month, with capacity for four residents total.
MCC facilities include an Anagama Wood Kiln, Wood Soda Kiln, Small Train Wood Kiln, Gas Soda Kiln, Gas Reduction Kiln, Raku Kiln, 19 Electric Kilns, Pizza Kiln, Soldner Mixer, Peter Pugger Pugmill, Ballmill, and Spray Booth. Applications are due April 30th, 2023. Residency runs August 1st, 2023 through July 15th, 2024. Applicants must have a degree from an accredited school or university before the beginning of their residency. Application requirements include a $25 fee, 15-20 images, image list, three references with contact information, artist statement, resume, letter of intent, and bio.
