About This Call
This exhibition at Oceanside Museum of Art invites Southern California-based artists to submit 2D artwork (painting, drawing, or artworks incorporating painting or drawing) for consideration. The exhibition explores representational painting that has been reshaped and "disrupted"—including by abstraction, web-based imagery, and socio-political concerns—in response to contemporary life and its challenges.
Eligibility is limited to residents of Southern California, defined as the geographical area from Santa Barbara to the north, Tijuana to the south, and inland counties from San Bernardino to Imperial. Artworks must be representational, wall-mounted two-dimensional work with external dimensions no larger than 120" in any direction and maximum weight of 200 pounds. Work in progress or concept sketches are acceptable, and hi-resolution digital prints will be considered for digital artworks and limited-edition print-making methods. Sculpture and 3D art will not be considered. The jurors will evaluate artworks based on their impact, originality, and relationship to the theme of disruption.
Entry fee is $25 per artist for up to 20 artworks. Scholarships are available for artists unable to cover this fee; contact [email protected] to inquire. The exhibition runs June 8–September 15, 2024. The prize is a Director's Choice Solo exhibition at Oceanside Museum of Art in 2025 or 2026. Jurors include John Seed (Lead Juror), Aleah Chapin, and Timothy Robert Smith. Notifications of selected works will be sent on or before May 2, 2024. Artwork drop-off is May 23-26, 12:00-5:00pm (tentative), with alternative dates and times available by appointment. A celebration will be held Saturday, June 8, 2024, 5:00-7:00pm. Artwork pick-up is September 19-23, 2024, 11:00am-5:00pm (tentative). Return shipping will take place within two weeks of the close of the exhibition.
