About This Call
The Arts Commission invites artists and designers working in glass to submit work for a juried exhibition and auction entitled Momentum: Hot Glass, taking place in downtown Toledo, Ohio, September 13-21, 2018. The exhibition gathers original creations in glass from the Toledo area and beyond, with an opening reception and $10,000 in prizes awarded.
The exhibition and auction is co-presented by Libbey Inc. in celebration of their 200th anniversary and The Arts Commission, in partnership with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, ProMedica, and Toledo's philanthropic community as part of Momentum, a three-day festival of music and art in the city's downtown. The Momentum: Hot Glass exhibition will continue through September 20, with an auction taking place September 20th as part of Toledo's monthly Art Loop, with proceeds benefiting The Arts Commission.
Artists are invited to design and produce functional drinkware or glass artwork inspired by functional drinkware, such as tumblers, cocktail shakers, martini glasses, pitchers, or glass works drawing inspiration from functional vessels. All work must be three-dimensional; no wall hangings accepted. Entries must have been completed after January 1, 2015, and all entries must be original. Up to 5 individual works with a total of 10 images may be entered. Curating jurors are Corey Hampson (Owner & Partner, Habatat Galleries), Diane Wright (Curator of Glass, Toledo Museum of Art), and Robert Zollweg (Design & Creative Director, Libbey Inc.).
Awards include: Libbey Purchase Award $3,000, Libbey People's Choice Award $1,000, 1st Place $3,000, 2nd Place $2,000, and 3rd Place $1,000. Entrants will be notified by July 20, 2018. Accepted artwork must be shipped or hand-delivered by August 31, 2018. All works should be available for purchase; artists can choose to receive a 50% or 25% commission, or donate proceeds 100% to The Arts Commission. All work will be insured for the artist's stated insurance amount while on display. A shipping stipend will be available to assist with return shipping costs following the exhibition if artwork does not sell.
