About This Call

The Arts Commission of Greater Toledo's Art in Public Places Program is soliciting qualifications from artists who specialize in producing large-scale murals. The project, funded by the City of Toledo One Percent for Art Program, ProMedica, and Imagination Station, will select up to seven artists to paint murals within tunnels and sites on ProMedica's Downtown campus along Water Street as well as Imagination Station.

Seven sites have been selected for the project, including indoor and outdoor areas such as ProMedica's Junction Building, Depot parking garage, two areas of the downtown concourse tunnel system, and a wall outside Imagination Station. Square footage per site ranges from 333 sq. ft. to 1,178 sq. ft. Selected artists will be expected to complete one conceptual design and, once approved, submit one final design, then paint a mural at a designated location as determined by the Design Review Board.

The project is open to all artists who are residents of the United States, age 18 and over, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, military status, sexual orientation, marital status, or physical or mental disability. Artist teams are eligible to apply, including teams of artists from multiple disciplines. Applicants must submit a one-page letter of interest, resume(s), and 5 digital images of professional mural work in JPEG format at 72 dpi, along with an image list including image number, artist name, title of work, medium, date, dimensions, and project budget. Each finalist will be paid $1,000 for proposal development expenses, and up to $1,000 will be available for site visit expenses. The budget for each of the seven locations ranges from $5,000 to $36,000, depending on the location selected. The qualifications deadline is May 29, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Selected artists will be notified June 14, 2021, with proposals due July 14, 2021, and final designs due July 30, 2021.
