About This Call
The City of Coral Springs Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is requesting proposals for a commissioned interactive icon that can move to different sites around Downtown Coral Springs. The interactive icon must be significant in size, provide great photo opportunities, and serve as a branding and marketing tool for Downtown.
The icon should be pedestrian scale with a minimum of 6 feet tall and a maximum of 12 feet in height and length. It must combine art and sign elements, be unique and creative, and clearly identify Downtown Coral Springs. The icon must have interactive aspects that allow spectators to walk or sit in, on, and around it, or become part of it. Kinetic artwork/signs are not welcome. The icon should incorporate one or more components of the Downtown logo and City logo, such as letters, colors, and/or design. It must be durable, require minimal ongoing maintenance, resist rust and fading, meet Florida building code wind resistance requirements, and include anti-theft and anti-graffiti considerations. The icon must be self-supporting on an open landscape or hardscape.
The selected artist will receive a budget of $55,000, which includes all taxes, fees, labor, transportation, and installation costs. The application deadline is March 15, 2017. The selection process has two rounds: Step 1 will shortlist three artists who each receive a $500 honorarium; Step 2 requires shortlisted artists to submit a detailed design statement, 3D model, maintenance plan with estimated yearly costs, and itemized project budget. The anticipated project schedule includes shortlisted artists selected by March 27, 2017, designs due May 8, 2017, final artist selected May 25, 2017, fabrication beginning June 1, 2017, and installation completed by October 1, 2017. Selection criteria include artistic merit, style and appropriateness to the landscape and community, technical feasibility and artist experience with public art projects, safety and durability, diversity in style and media, and ability to transport the icon while preventing theft.
