About This Call

The City of Atlanta Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs invites architects, artists, and designers to submit qualifications for the design, production, and installation of a laser-cut metal fence with LED backlighting to be installed on MLK Jr. Drive underneath the I-20 overpass. The artwork will be part of a 7.2-mile east-west corridor connecting points of interest including the Mercedes Benz Stadium, Atlanta University Center, Atlanta BeltLine, Westview Cemetery, and MARTA bus stops. The area is internationally significant as the home of intellectual leaders of human rights, including W.E.B. DuBois, Booker T. Washington, and Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr.

The Renew Atlanta initiative sponsoring this installation aims to address vehicular and pedestrian safety concerns, provide additional pedestrian and bicycle access through new multi-use trails, and introduce a new linear park along the corridor. The westside fence should be approximately 182 feet long and the eastside fence approximately 156 feet long. The City is seeking applicants with portfolios demonstrating professional experience designing, fabricating, and installing contemporary fencing with ability to execute architectural work with artistic design.

The total project budget is $600,000, with payment in four draws: $150,000 upon selection, $150,000 at 1/3 completion, $150,000 at 2/3 completion, and $150,000 upon project completion. If selected to submit a proposal, applicants will receive $1,000 and one month to develop the proposal. The selected artist will be responsible for subcontracting fabrication, installation, transportation, and travel costs. Applicants must submit a one-page statement of interest (minimum 10pt font), résumé (maximum 2 pages), three professional references, and past work samples with descriptions and budgets. Electronic qualifications must be received by 11:59 PM on April 2, 2018.
