About This Call
The City of Atlanta Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs invites professional bronze sculptors to submit qualifications for a site-specific statue of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. to be installed near the entryway of MLK Drive at Northside Drive in Atlanta, Georgia, opposite the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The bronze statue should be 12 feet tall atop a 6-foot foundation, installed in the street median approximately 380 feet from the intersection of MLK Drive and Northside Drive. Electricity will be provided at the site for statue lighting. The site will be landscaped to ensure accessibility and complement the sculpture.
The City is seeking applicants with portfolios demonstrating monumental scale bronze portrait sculptures with strong portraiture likeness to the subject matter. All applicants regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, origin, or disability will be considered. Selection will be based on artist merit and technical expertise, demonstrated successful and innovative approaches to public art projects of similar scope, ability to execute a public art project in a culturally rich and complex area, and expressed interest in the opportunities presented by this request.
The all-inclusive budget is $350,000, covering all artist fees, engineering, fabrication, foundations, lighting, pedestal design and build, installation, insurance, permitting, and travel costs. Payment will be made in four draws: $50,000 upon contract, $100,000 at 25 percent completion, $100,000 at 75 percent completion, and $100,000 upon completion. The contract term is not to exceed twelve months for design and fabrication services. Required application materials include a one-page statement of interest (minimum 10pt font), a résumé with three professional references (maximum 2 pages per person), and work samples in one or more formats (5-10 images required). Applications allow submission of up to 2 entries.
