About This Call
#Migration61 is an exhibition organized by Busboys and Poets, Washington, DC, open to local, regional, national, and international artists. The exhibition will be displayed across all six Busboys and Poets locations in the metropolitan Washington, DC area from October 15, 2016 through March 5, 2017.
The call is open to diverse media including drawing, painting, mixed media, conceptual, performance, photography, film, and video (no free-standing sculpture). Artwork must reflect the theme of migration, emigration, or immigration. Artists are encouraged to explore subtopics such as human emotions (fear, anger, hope, optimism, strength), economic transformation, change, isolation, nationality, language, citizenship, gentrification, and resettlement. Artwork does not need to be created in the aesthetic style of Jacob Lawrence.
Submissions are accepted from August 9 through September 13, 2016. The entry fee is $20 for up to 7 images, payable online or by check/money order mailed to PO Box 73055, Washington, DC 20056. Artists may submit up to 7 images, 7 audio files, or 7 video files (minimum 5 total samples required). Include a short bio, artist statement, titles of works, medium, sizes, and brief descriptions of how work relates to migration. Sound or video artists should submit at least three audio/visual examples. Accepted artists will be notified by September 23, 2016, with work delivery required September 26-28, 2016. Busboys and Poets provides art insurance. Artwork is available for sale with no commission taken by Busboys and Poets. Jurors include Elsa Smithgall (Curator, The Phillips Collection), A.M. Weaver (Independent Curator and Writer), Andy Shallal (Owner, Busboys and Poets), and Carol R. Dyson (Curator in Residence, Busboys and Poets).
