About This Call

Midtown Park, newly opened in the heart of Houston, is seeking artists interested in developing a temporary artwork for the park's central elevator. The elevator, which is elevated with a glass and concrete housing, is a focal point of the park as parts of it are visible from virtually every corner. An artist will be selected to develop a treatment for the concrete housing, covering one or more levels. The selected work(s) will remain on view for approximately three years prior to a new one being commissioned. The budget for the project is up to $35,000, based upon the overall approach, design and materials proposed.

Eligibility is open to all artists or artist teams located in Harris County with some experience in developing site-specific works of public art. A small group of three to five finalists will be selected to develop concepts for which they will each receive a $500 honorarium. The Midtown Park Board will make the final selection of the project to be realized from the finalists' concepts.

Submit a resume, artist statement, and a maximum of 20 images online by August 28, 2018. Finalists will be approved by September 11, 2018, with concepts due October 23, 2018, and final board approval on November 13, 2018.
