About This Call
The University of Miami School of Communications, in collaboration with Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places, seeks qualifications from professional artists or artist teams in Miami-Dade County to create temporary public art interventions examining sea level rise and its potential impact on Miami-Dade County, concentrating on creative representations based on science and community perspectives. Up to ten (10) artists will be commissioned. Applications from architects, landscape architects, or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team.
Selected artists will receive introductory issue orientations working with key faculty and students at the University of Miami involved in research and curriculum on sea level rise. Artists will collaborate with Rich Beckman, Professor at University of Miami, and Coral Morphologic (biologist Colin Foord and musician Jared McKay) to conceptualize projects. The project will be curated by Brandi Reddick, Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places. Each selected artist will be featured in a short video documenting the production of their piece and philosophy, to be published as part of a larger web project on sea level rise. Selected artists will also attend an unveiling of their art at a community event with invited media. The estimated public art budget is $50,000. Artwork locations will be at various locations throughout Miami-Dade County, to be determined by selected artists. In conceptualizing projects and choosing materials, artists should consider the permanence of artwork, maintenance requirements, and their relationship to environmental conditions such as South Florida's harsh sunlight, rain, wind, and proximity to seawater.
Eligibility is limited to professional artists or artist teams in Miami-Dade County. Miami-Dade County employees and selection panelists and their immediate family members are excluded from participation. Applicants must submit ten (10) images of previously completed work, an artist statement (no more than 5000 characters), and a current professional resume via the CaFÉ online application system. There is no application fee. The application deadline is Friday, September 30, 2015 at midnight.
