About This Call

The Miami-Dade County Internal Services Department and Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs through its Art in Public Places Program request qualifications from professional artists to create a site-specific installation for the lobby of the Joseph Caleb Center Courthouse, located at NW 54th Street and NW 22nd Avenue, Miami, FL. The selected artist will develop a site-specific project in the entrance lobby space to transform the most public areas of the courthouse and create a unique identity for the new "branch" courthouse.

The Joseph Caleb Community Center is an existing complex consisting of a library, day care center, performing arts center and County administrative offices. The new courthouse building, a 28,500 sq. ft. annex, will front NW 54th Street, a major east-west thoroughfare in Liberty City. A four-level, 450-space parking garage is also being constructed on the NW corner of the site. The courthouse will handle civil and traffic-related cases and contains two courtrooms, two judge's chambers and space for the Clerk of Courts, Administrative office of the Courts and Miami-Dade Police. The new courthouse is designed to be LEED Silver certified with sustainable finish materials throughout the interior spaces.

Possible areas for art integration include a flooring system for the public areas of the first and second floor lobbies and ancillary corridors, glass railings for the interior staircase, and a chandelier/lighting system in the double-height main atrium. Professional visual artists demonstrating innovative, contemporary and creative approaches to permanent, site-specific works are encouraged to apply. The estimated art budget is $300,000, inclusive of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, and all other costs associated with implementation. Finalists will be paid a $1,200 honorarium to develop specific proposals. The project is open to experienced professional artists residing in the United States. Applications from architects, landscape architects or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team. Miami-Dade employees and selection panelists' immediate family members are excluded from participation. Application deadline: January 20, 2012. Contact: Brandi Reddick at 305.375.5436 or [email protected].
