About This Call

Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places, in partnership with the Internal Services Department and Community Action and Human Services Department, seeks qualifications from professional artists to create a site-specific installation for the Arcola Lakes Head Start Center located at 770 NW 83rd Street, Arcola Lakes, FL. The selected artist will develop an innovative project that merges the public art component with LEED Innovation in Design educational credits. The estimated art budget is $70,000, which must be inclusive of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, and all other costs associated with project implementation.

The new 16,350 square-foot Arcola Lakes Head Start Center will serve 120 preschoolers and is registered for achieving Silver LEED certification. As part of its LEED initiative, the facility will incorporate a "green" building education program. Artists are challenged to create artwork that educates children (ages pre-K through 5) about green building, global environment, and creating a sustainable future, while referencing "green" methods used in the building. Professional visual artists demonstrating innovative, contemporary, and creative approaches to permanent, site-specific works are encouraged to apply. The strength of the artist's concept, design capabilities, and established track record of museum/gallery exhibitions are the program's highest priorities.

Eligibility is open to professional artists residing in Miami-Dade County. Applications from architects, landscape architects, or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team. Miami-Dade employees and selection panelists' immediate family members are excluded from participation. Finalists will be paid a $600 honorarium to develop specific proposals. The application deadline is February 10, 2012. All materials must be submitted online via CaFÉ with no application fee.
